Pen Y Cymoedd Powers Student Curiosity with Fully funded Wind Turbine Workshops
Over 280 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from seven schools in the Rhondda, Cynon, Neath and Afan areas have taken part in our Wind Turbine Workshops during the first phase of the project running to February half term.
Thanks to funding from the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund, EESW have been able to purchase new Wind Turbine kits which have enhanced delivery of this project and enabled us to deliver workshops to schools around the Pen Y Cymoedd Benefit Area free of charge.
Students have enjoyed learning about sustainable energy through the context of the Welsh Government’s aim to meet 100% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2035. Through a practical 2-hour workshop, students learn how wind turbines work and develop problem-solving skills by building and testing their own wind turbines with the goal of maximising voltage output.
In addition to developing essential communication skills as they work within groups, students can add technical words such as gears, blades, generators, and motors to their vocabulary. Furthermore, with the help of resources provided by Vattenfall who own and operate the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm, we are able to inspire students about future jobs by highlighting the variety of careers in the local area linked to onshore wind.
Many more schools have already signed up to take part in the coming months, and we encourage any schools located in the Pen Y Cymoedd Benefit Area to contact us to book a workshop.
