EESW Delivers Pilot Semiconductor Project with CSconnected
This month we’ve delivered four sessions to 110 pupils in primary schools in South Wales, the schools were, Pil Primary School, Afon y Felin Primary School, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Tonyrefail Primary and Y Bont Faen Primary School.
The workshops were part of a pilot project with CSconnected, the compound semiconductor cluster based in Wales. During the sessions the pupils were able to learn about electrical conductivity, polarity and semiconductors through hands on modelling using electronic kits. The delivery presentations were modified to link with the existing school themes or schemes of work to ensure that the intervention was not seen in isolation and could be integrated within the schools existing work.
Mrs Millard from Y Bont Faen Primary commented:
“A fantastic hands on learning experience for the children - thank you. Great links to real life situations”.
Mr Hughes from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Tonyrefail remarked "A fantastic day where children learned new skills to educate themselves about conductors, insulators, semiconductors and that most electrical circuits work using input, process and output components. The children particularly enjoyed the practical activity of building the circuits."
EESW hopes to continue working with CSconnected to deliver future projects to schools, and there is plenty of room for expansion. The sessions would be advantageous to schools as it will allow them to fully ingrate the delivery content into their future curriculum planning. It would also enable the pupils to continue to enjoy cutting-edge Engineering activities in the classroom, consequently preparing them to make informed choices about future careers in industries situated in South Wales.
