F1 in Schools North and South Wales Regional Finals
EESW STEM Cymru’s F1 in Schools North Wales Regional event took place at Venue Cymru on the 22nd of March, and the South Wales Regional event took place at a brand-new venue – Swansea Arena on the 27th of March 2023.
Over 300 students aged between 12 and 19 took part in this year’s F1 in Schools Welsh Regional competitions.
The North Wales Regional hosted 100 students, and the South Wales was attended by 200 students, all along with their teachers and mentors.
The beginning of the season seemed short, with the delay in schools partaking as the Nationals for 2022 took place in January 2023 due to the pandemic. There was then an unbelievably quick turn around with this year’s regionals taking part in March, but despite this, all our F1 teams did exceptionally well.
The F1 in Schools activity itself is going from strength to strength, in both North and South Wales, and the EESW STEM Cymru delivery team have supported many teams with CAD sessions, floor races, as well as introductory sessions for schools who had never taken part before. Whole cohorts of pupils across Wales have had F1 in Schools incorporated into their curriculum, and some schools who wanted to run the project on a smaller scale with students who have a personal interest in F1 and wanted to compete alongside their studies.
The standard of work produced by this year’s pupils has been particularly high, which meant for two fantastic regional competitions in March. The students were required to prepare for a series of streams of judging, including a verbal presentation, portfolio, pit display, their brand identity and of course, the design of their F1 car using CAD software.
North Wales this year was particularly successful, with 16 teams taking part in total, and in South Wales 21 teams. The standard of the competition was so high this year that F1 in Schools decided to offer an additional qualifying space where a Welsh team is invited to attend the National competition.
We’re looking forward to supporting you further in the season and congratulations – good luck in the competition this coming July!
