In this workshop pupils discover the amazing world of semiconductors around them by using electronic kits to gather information about insulating and conducting materials, electrical polarity and semiconductor components.
Building on this knowledge pupils will then use semiconducting component applications to apply their new knowledge in Design Situations.

How it works

This workshop is suitable for pupils in Years 5 and 6 and takes approximately 1.5 - 2 hours with a class of 30.

The workshop requires no prior learning in electronics or materials, pupils have great fun while discovering the application of electronics and semiconductors.

These fully funded workshops are available for primary schools in South East Wales local authorities of Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan (Cardiff Capital Region) through our CSconnected project.

Why take part

✔ All equipment and resources are provided by EESW to take part in this activity.
✔ Multiple classes and year groups can be catered for in Years 5 & 6, Progression step 3.
✔ The workshop is mapped against the Curriculum for Wales 2022 and the Literacy and Numeracy framework.
✔ The workshop can be tailored to fit within a schools current teaching theme or scheme of work.

Schools will need to provide a projector/screen on which to display instructions and suitable classroom space for delivery.

A fantastic day where children learned new skills to educate themselves about conductors, insulators, semiconductors and that most electrical circuits work using input, process and output components. The children particularly enjoyed the practical activity of building the circuits.
